Where LIKEME® Lighthouse Gets its Funding

To the editor:
Since the LIKEME® Lighthouse opened in March 2012, many services have been offered at the 3909 Main facility. We are open seven days a week, with our library and computer room available to all. Every Tuesday night offers a free LGBT movie, and various social meetings are held on Wednesday nights. Saturday afternoon square dancing is always packed. We also offer educational sessions, and other LGBT organizations are holding meetings at our facility.
Unfortunately, a misconception has come about that needs to be clarified. LIKEME® did not promise in a 2010 meeting that we would never raise any funds from the Kansas City area. What was actually said was that we would not compete for grant dollars that were directed to other KC organizations. It would be unrealistic to ask the rest of the country to support Kansas City’s community center.
The Lighthouse was renovated, opened and operated last year with dollars exclusively from outside Kansas City. New funds for 2013 and beyond have come from sources not earmarked for other Kansas City organizations. We are very appreciative of the community relationships we have formed and value the dollars offered to keep Kansas City’s community center open.
