News is breaking on two issues affecting LGBT equality ― one of them national and the other local ― as we publish this issue of Camp. An anti-discrimination ordinance was defeated in Roeland Park, and President Obama used an executive order to expand similar protections for federal workers and contractors.

Obama signs order protecting LGBT people from discrimination
On the morning of July 21, President Obama signed an executive order amending President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Executive Order 11246 to include protection from workplace discrimination by federal contractors on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and amending President Richard Nixon’s Executive Order 11478 to include protection from discrimination on the basis of gender identity for federal employees. Obama’s order does not include the broad religious exemption that some faith leaders had wanted. According to the White House, this measure will affect 24,000 companies and 28 million employees.
Ron Griffin retires from KCMO Health Department
Congratulations and a huge thank-you to Ron Griffin, MPH, who is retiring July 31 from his position as Division Manager, Communicable Disease Control and Prevention and Public Health Preparedness with the Kansas City, Mo., Health Department. Griffin dedicated 44 years to serving in the public health field. Many of you know him from Kansas City Pride festivals and other events, where he and his staff had booths to inform, educate, and provide testing and other health information so important to the LGBT community. We offer Griffin and his colleagues Bill Snook, Jeff Hershberger, Frank Thompson and Health Department Director Rex Archer our best wishes as they search for a replacement for Griffin.
Betty Crocker unveils Rainbow Dessert recipes
I just learned that even the venerable Betty Crocker got into Pride month by unveiling a special section on the company’s website for Rainbow Desserts. There you will find not only a recipe for a rainbow layer cake, but also recipes for rainbow cupcakes, cookies, waffle cakes and more. Who knew? Kansas City Titans Fundraiser
The undefeated Kansas City Titans — the only professional women’s full-tackle football team in Kansas and Missouri — are making a run for a national championship, but they need help to go all the way. They are planning a player signing event to raise funds for the team’s expenses going into the playoffs. Players will be available for signings and photos, and team memorabilia will be available for purchase at the event, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the California Pizza Kitchen, 4743 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, Mo. CPK will donate 20 percent of the proceeds raised. Though not technically an LGBT team, the Titans include several lesbian players.

Kansas City Black Pride
Celebrations will be scheduled at several locations, including Social Bar and a Field Day picnic of events at Liberty Park in Kansas City, Mo. The King and Queen Pageant will be held the evening of Aug. 8. Event details were still being worked out at publication time, but information will be updated on the group’s Facebook page: KansasCity Black Pride.

Inaugural Rainbow Run for Equality
A new 5K run/walk is scheduled at 7 a.m. on Cliff Drive in Kessler Park, Kansas City, Mo. The organizers report that a portion of the money raised will benefit PROMO, Missouri’s statewide group fighting for the rights of LGBT Missourians. For more information: Related
