2016 Spirit of Pride honoree:
Camp and Hamburger Mary’s created the Spirit of Pride Award in 2015 for people who we feel personify Pride – living openly and fearlessly every day. We’re proud this year to select David Lopez.
In 2009, Lopez helped create the KC Bear Mafia, a 501(c)3 organization to serve the LGBT community of the greater Kansas City area. He has been one of the organizers for the KC Bear Mafia’s very successful annual “Bear Crossing” weekend, as well as other events with the group. Lopez also serves as a board member of the LIKEME Lighthouse.
Lopez, 40, was born and raised in Kansas City, Mo. He graduated from Rockhurst University in 1999. He has worked with various Latino organizations throughout the years, such as LULAC National Educational Service Centers, which work to increase educational opportunities for Latino people, and the National Hispanic Institute, which fosters future community leaders.
For the last five years, he has been a facilities coordinator with Great-West Financial at its Overland Park location. Lopez resides in Prairie Village, Kan., with his husband of 15-plus years, Greg, and their dog, Peeve.
We’re presenting the award this year in October, which is LGBT History Month and the month of National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11).
We will celebrate Lopez and his award at Hamburger Mary’s at 8 p.m. on Oct. 16. Look for more details on the Facebook pages for Hamburger Mary’s and Camp Kansas City, and come join us!
